EU PROJECTS

InteGra

Development of a system for creating non-linear RPG games in Unreal Engine 5, enabling the creation of psychologically coherent characters whose decisions reflect their implied psyche, based on research in the fields of game studies, psychology, and AI (LLM) technology.

Project No.: FENG.01.01-IP.02-2061/23 co-financed by the European Union under the European Funds for a Modern Economy Program 2021-2027

  • Total project value: PLN 23,161,453.22

  • EU funding contribution: PLN 16,686,789.20

What is the goal?

We intend to create an innovative system for designing non-linear RPG games. InteGra combines game studies, psychological models, and LLM technology to create characters that feel authentically alive, built in Unreal Engine 5.

The end result is a system enabling the creation of characters whose decisions reflect a coherent underlying psyche. This will allow for a deeper and more immersive level of gameplay for every player—personalized to a degree that exceeds current industry standards.

How will we reach it?

In order to reach that goal, the Research and Development (R&D) phase is divided into three primary tasks:

  • Task 1: Industrial Research on Immersion and Character Design

    • What we are doing: During this phase, we are conducting game studies to pinpoint the specific factors that deepen player immersion. Alongside this, we are carrying out psychological research to develop an optimal model for building a character's psychological profile, as well as researching dialogue modeling. This foundational work will drive our prototype research, which focuses on the experimental programming of the system. Ultimately, we will build four key components integrated directly into Unreal Engine 5: a data processing module for character interactions, UI, and dialogue; a framework for representing character psychology; an embedded questionnaire to assess player needs; and a dialogue personalization engine.

  • Task 2: Industrial Research on InteGra System Integration

    • What we are doing: Leveraging the results of the first phase, we build a playable game prototype powered by the InteGra system. This prototype will incorporate all core product components necessary to generate a psychologically consistent main character model, complete with dialogue that accurately reflects that psychological profile. Following this, we will conduct UX research with player focus groups to analyze their experiences and implement improvements. This phase also includes a comprehensive quality evaluation and operational verification of the system, which will guide further refinements to the InteGra prototype in preparation for the next stage of development.

  • Task 3: Beta Development and System Evaluation

    • What we are doing: Finally, we are expanding the game that serves as the narrative and gameplay benchmark for the InteGra system to create a Beta version. We will rigorously verify whether the system effectively meets the needs of our target audience, making any necessary adjustments based on these findings and continued UX testing. The final step is validating the system's competitive edge by measuring key indicators of player satisfaction and overall engagement.

Who is this for?

  • Players: RPG fans seeking deeper immersion and characters that react naturally, intelligently, and unpredictably to their choices.

  • Developers: InteGra will streamline our internal production pipeline, enabling us to build richer, more complex game worlds at an accelerated pace.

What is the projected outcome?

Ultimately, the project will deliver a fully functional version of the InteGra system. This technology will reduce ludonarrative dissonance and enhance player immersion by personalizing the gaming experience in ways currently unseen in the industry. Key advancements include:

  • Increasing the psychological realism of characters.

  • Modeling individual differences in human behavior.

  • Strengthening the alignment between a character's underlying traits and their observable actions.

  • Establishing a dynamic feedback loop between a character's actions, their dialogue, and their psychological profile.

The most direct outcome of this project will be the integration of the InteGra system into the development pipeline and release of our upcoming first-person detective RPG, Ibru. This title will serve as a proof-of-concept, demonstrating the full capabilities of games powered by the InteGra framework.
